Testimonial from a member appreciation event at a local sporting facility:

"Sincere appreciation was expressed by one of the club members for the opportunity to participate in the Melanoma screening that was facilitated by the Club at out Member Appreciation Day event. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer with some 200,000 US cases per year.
This member opted to wait in line, event though it was a very hot day and opted to have all three family members and themselves to be screened in the skin screening event being done by Team Truck Melanoma and OHSU Dermatology Chair Dr. Sancy Leachman.
The member's son had a couple of moles on his back that the doctor recommended be biopsied, and they were subsequently benign. The member had a small, pea-sized discoloration on his neck behind his ear that the doctor suggested be looked at right away, and probably biopsied. 
The biopsy revealed a stage zero, superficial melanoma that required additional surgery to insure all of the potentially harmful cells were removed. The following surgery was a total success, and the member is completely healed. 
He considers himself fortunate that early detection and treatment were successful and is very thankful."

"I was recently repping our cider at a local beer festival when I came across the table giving free skin screenings setup by (Team Truck Melanoma) OHSU. Over the last couple years I have developed a strange spot on my skin that I thought would be worth looking into since the screening was completely free. I am sure happy I did!

I filled out the form and was shortly sent in the back to be screened and ended up finding after a closer look that the spot has the potential of being cancerous. I was highly encouraged by Sancy Leachman M.D. to get a further inspection/analysis of this spot and even gave me her contact information to make sure if I had any questions to reach out. 

I am a 28 y/o M who works out 5 times a week and I'm very particular about eating healthy foods and living a healthy lifestyle. Spots like this would have never occurred to me to have the potential of being so dangerous and I especially would have never gone to get checked out in the first place because I rarely have any health concerns. I now have health insurance and I am going to get this spot checked in a couple weeks all because of this screening.

What We're About

Who We Are

We are Team Truck Melanoma, replace the T with an F and you will know how we feel about melanoma! Our team was founded by Ryan Kiernan CMA (AAMA). As medical assistant working in the field of dermatology for the last 10 years, he has assisted some of the best doctors in the area of early melanoma detection. He is also a Motorsports and automotive enthusiast. His interest for spreading melanoma awareness was initially instilled into him by his mentor, Dr. Glen Bowen. One day he decided to combine both passions in to one, talked to a few like minded individuals, and Team Truck Melanoma was born. 

Why we do what we do

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, however, when detected early, it can be effectively treated. Our goal is taking melanoma awareness and early detection techniques to the Motorsports community. We offer outreach booths that incorporate free skin exams from local dermatologists. Our last event's impact was 25 skin exams done, 1 potential melanoma and 4 potential nonmelanoma skin exams found. Total for 2023-8 potential melanomas, and 16 potential non-melanoma skin cancers identified. By meeting our community where they're at, we are changing and potentially saving lives. Our race vehicle, the LentiGO, is an awesome conversation starter for melanoma awareness both on and off the track. 

The ABCDEs of Melanoma

A stands for ASYMMETRY
  • One side is not like the other.
B stands for BORDER
  • The edges are irregular or ragged. 
C stands for COLOR
  • It has color variations, such as shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red or white. 
D stands for DIAMETER
  • It’s more than 6 millimeters across (the size of a pencil eraser), though it can be smaller. 
E stands for EVOLVING
  • The mole may change in size, color or shape.

Melanoma can affect ANYONE

Everyone needs to check their feet for signs of melanoma. People of all races and colors get melanoma on their feet. In fact, about the same number of African Americans and Caucasians develop melanoma on a foot. For people of African or Asian ethnicity, the feet and hands are the most common places for melanoma to appear. (AAD, 2023) 

We are enthusiasts, like you

We are car people. Automotive enthusiasts. Off-roaders. Racers. Motorcyclists. We are like you! We also have a passion about spreading melanoma awareness. As dermatology professionals, we have seen first hand how melanoma can effect people, families and communities.

Our mission is to spread melanoma awareness and early detection techniques in a fun an unique way to a community that might otherwise not receive the message. 
Your support is allowing us to become a common name in the motorsports community,  and in doing so, raise awareness and ultimately lower melanoma deaths. 

Education is key

Educating people about melanoma, and what to look for on their or their partner's skin is the key. Melanoma stands out. Most melanoma's arise in new moles, they don't look like other moles. Often referred to as ugly ducklings. If you see something concerning on your skin, contact your doctor. Another great resource is www.sklip.ai which is a Dermatoscope (allows you to really see the skin makeup) that attaches to any smart phone and allows you to send photos of you concerning spots. This can also help get you into a provider sooner. 

Learn how to check your skin

"Knowing your own body — your moles, what's normal, what's not normal — is one of your most valuable tools for early detection. Generally, a skin cancer screening with a dermatology provider is recommended every year. Knowing how to screen yourself, and doing it consistently in-between visits can help you stay on top of your own skin health, potentially catching harmful changes in your skin as soon as possible."

Our History
Our team was formed in an idea that came to mind in the parking lot of a local 4x4 Store that was hosting a Rigs and Coffee event in Sherwood, Oregon. Ironman 4x4 USA. It was here that our team captain saw several Gambler 500 vehicles and a rally race car, as well as the info booth for TreadLightly.   He thought, "someone should really spread melanoma awareness information like this!"  
It began with an anonymous donation
The mission started to become a reality with a generous anonymous donation of $500 to purchase our race vehicle. We purchased it, towed it home and everything started to build from there. Team Truck Melanoma has been growing into a life form of it's own. From a donation we were born, and from donations we grow and expand.
