FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Team Truck Melanoma: Racing for Awareness Organization Info: Team Truck Melanoma Portland, OR, USA Website: www.teamtruckmelanoma.org Contact: Ryan Kiernan Director and Team Captain Email: [email protected] Portland, OR, July 18, 2023 – Team Truck Melanoma, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and promoting early detection of melanoma, continues to make a significant impact within the motorsport community. By actively engaging with racing enthusiasts and track workers, the organization has successfully distributed sunscreen packets, facilitated free skin checks, and educated individuals about the importance of sun protection and skin exams. At the recent NASCAR event, Team Truck Melanoma was able to reach a broad audience by handing out over 3,000 packets of sunscreen. These sunscreen packets serve as a vital resource in protecting individuals from harmful UV rays. Furthermore, through their on-site presence, they facilitated free skin checks, leading to the early detection of four melanomas and one basal cell carcinoma. By providing these crucial services directly to the NASCAR community, Team Truck Melanoma is saving lives and promoting skin health. During the 62nd Annual Rose Cup, Team Truck Melanoma distributed 1,680 sunscreen samples and took the opportunity to engage with the car enthusiast community, stressing the importance of proper sunscreen application and knowing the ABCDE’s of melanoma. By targeting this specific audience, Team Truck Melanoma is ensuring that those who spend extended periods exposed to the sun are equipped with the knowledge and resources to protect their skin effectively. “Growing up, I spent numerous long days at the Portland International Raceway under the scorching sun due to my family's deep involvement in the motorsport community. However, this exposure came at a cost, as we all suffered numerous sunburns and I experienced a personal scare with melanoma in situ. It was through this experience that I truly grasped the significance of melanoma education and advocating for diligent monitoring of our moles,” says Jaclyn Roland-McGowan, an OHSU medical student and volunteer of Team Truck Melanoma. “For me, Team Truck Melanoma's unwavering commitment to directly deliver melanoma awareness to the motorsports community is deeply inspiring. Their initiatives, including sunscreen distribution, free skin checks, and educational discussions, are actively changing lives and empowering individuals to take charge of their skin health. I am wholeheartedly passionate about being part of Team Truck Melanoma's mission.” In addition to their outreach efforts, Team Truck Melanoma aims to have a race vehicle that proudly showcases their message of melanoma awareness on and off the track. By leveraging the visibility and excitement of motorsports, the organization seeks to spark important conversations. With the support and generosity of the community, Team Truck Melanoma continues to grow and fulfill its mission of saving lives through education and early detection. To stay updated on Team Truck Melanoma's initiatives, individuals are invited to follow them on Instagram and Twitter at @truck_melanoma, and visit them at one of their future events, such as the IndyCar race in September.
